Meeting Minutes

SOUTH NORFOLK CIVIC LEAGUE

MAY 13, 2019

The meeting was called to order at 7:02 PM.  Dawn Morton led us in prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance.

The minutes from April were approved.

Captain Dunlap from the 2nd Precinct shared that crime in our area is in a downward trend.  He reminds everyone to keep their car doors locked and valuables out of sight.  Officer Johnson wants everyone to be mindful that as the weather gets warmer vehicle larceny increases.  A detective from the gang unit was also present giving updates on group activity in the area.

We now have a tentative closing date for the Gateway property and hope to hear their plans for the property in the very near future.

The city is still working on South Norfolk’s image and we hope to hear something sometime in June.

Since our last cleanup day in April was such a success, we will be having another one June 22nd.  A light breakfast of pastries and lunch will be provided.  Meetup location still to be determined.  We hope to do this several times a year.

Our July Fourth Parade and celebration are right on schedule.  Chesapeake Regional Healthcare will be our presenting sponsor. They have made a donation, which will help tremendously with our scholarships. We are hoping to continue this partnership in future years to come.  We still need sponsors and for $25.00 you can have a spot on the back of the fans that are passed out during the celebration.  Parade spots are still available.

Our Elizabeth River Food Truck event is going well.  Vendors are still needed.  To date we have made a profit.  Rena B Wright will be at our next event.

There seems to be progress on our infrastructure and public utilities:

  • The 22nd Street Bridge is still on schedule.
  • Virginia, Redstart and Westridge Seward renewal will begin late June
  • Edgewood pipe replacement complete, a few things still left to complete.  Resurfacing is under another contract
  • 18th Street sewer renewal to tentatively start Fall 2019
  • Decatur Street sewer renewal to start late Fall 2019

The Neighborhood Watch announced that all board positions would be open in October 2019.  There are still a couple of garden boxes available at the community garden.  Volunteers are needed.  Girl Scout Troop 51 has been a tremendous help in keeping the gardens weeded.

Gianni Rawls from New Vision at Chesapeake Ave United Methodist Church is offering GED classes.

There will be a HRT meeting May 21st at the South Norfolk Library from 5-7.  They will be discussing what is needed to improve transportation in this area.

The Landbank Authority is still looking for a director.  It has been narrowed down to two.

We would like to get updates on our TIF fund for our monthly meetings.

Clyde Hunter from The South Norfolk Library announced that starting June 3rd residents who meet certain qualifications will be able to receive an online high school degree (not a GED). Also exciting, the eggs are hatching at the library.

Meeting adjourned at 7:38
