SOUTH NORFOLK CIVIC LEAGUE MINUTES

JULY 8, 2019

The meeting was called to order at 7:02 p.m. by Tim Buma, President, followed by prayer and Pledge of Allegiance.

Minutes from June 10th meeting were reviewed and approved.

Officer Johnson – Community Resource Officer

  • Weapon Offenses are up, pulling over more and getting weapons off the street
  • Hispanic male has been observed at Sturbridge Village trying to coerce children in car.  Police were notified and flyers have been sent out. More patrols have been added.
  • May be the last meeting of Officer Johnson at civic league, may be going into the schools
  • Remember, report suspicious activity

Our July 4th Parade and Picnic in the park made a profit.  Dedicated volunteers: Beth (parade), Vicki (park) Jeff, Mike, Joe (set-up) Suzy (publicity)  We will need more volunteers next year to run it more efficiently. We had approximately 3,000 fans distributed.  A low ball estimate of 4,000 attended. We will have Tidewater Drive Band back next year.

The civic league scholarships went to:

  • 1st Place – Joel Winn
  • 2nd Place – Isabel Waldron

The Food Trucks will be here Thursday.  Bubba’s 33 has reached out to us. Wants to be community involved and will be in attendance.  So far the food trucks have made $1,898 to date. We still have one vendor that owes.

The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office Annual South Norfolk Basketball Tournament will be July 10, 2019 at Johnson Park.  The civic league will supply snack cakes and ice pops.

City road construction will be starting on the following streets:

  • Edgewood Ave.
  • Westwood Ave.
  • Virginia Ave.

Detour street will be Anne Ave.

Neighborhood Watch  will be having the National Night Out on August 6th.  Volunteers are needed. A motion was made by Vicki Josue and seconded by Mike Dixon to give to National Night Out.   The October meeting of the Watch will be the election of officers. All positions are open. Meetings will be moved to Monday nights right before Civic League meetings, with hopes of increasing attendance.The Chesapeake First Responder’s Day will be held by the 2nd Precinct.  Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served. Volunteers needed.

We were recognized and thanked  by the Portlock Primary Tigers for putting a spot in their yearbook.
