Bridge construction to begin Monday, Jan. 14

Scott Frechem, City of Chesapeake project manager for the 22nd Street Bridge, recently informed SNCL officials that a contract has been awarded and construction on the new bridge will begin on Monday, Jan. 14, unless there is snow.

The bridge contract was awarded to a Maryland-based bridge contrator, Corman Kokosing Construction Company. The company has divisions in Annapolis and Baltimore, MD, and Colonial Heights and Chesapeake, VA and serves the mid-Atlantic region which includes DC, Delaware and parts of North Carolina.

Corman Kokosing will hire a subcontractor for the demolition of the old bridge, which was condemned and closed to traffic Aug. 1 for structural issues.

OSHS seeks new football coach

Oscar Smith High School is looking for a new football coach after Scott Johnson announced his retirement as coach on Tuesday. Johnson taught history at the school and coached the football team for two years. He will retire at the end of the school year, but he intends to remain as coach until a replacement is found.

SNCL meets Monday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m.

The South Norfolk Civic League will hold its regular January membership meeting on Monday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. at the South Norfolk Community Center, 1217 Godwin Ave. in Portlock.

All are welcome to attend, but only members may vote. Annual membership to the SNCL is $10 for a family or $5 for individuals.
