January, February 2018 Meetings
The South Norfolk Civic League has had a busy spring. After a snow-cancelled January meeting we were ready to start the year in February. We made the decision to hold a forum for the candidates that were running for the Chesapeake School Board and the Chesapeake City Council.
March, April 2018 Meetings
Instead of regular meetings, the South Norfolk Civic League held a community forum for the school board on March 12th and another community forum for the city council Forum on April 9th. There were 11 candidates running for five seats on the school board and 16 candidates running for the Chesapeake City Council.
Both forums were well attended and our members gained the knowledge they needed to made a decision that will affect our every day lives in Chesapeake.
May 2018 Meeting – 7 p.m. May 14
For our May 14th membership meeting, we will have City Manager Mr. James Baker as our guest speaker. He will be speaking on the municipal building that the city is proposing to build on the Gateway site, that includes a new police station, many municipal offices and retail space.
A new Fire station is proposed for the 8 acres site where the old 22nd Street bridge will be coming down. We will need to support this proposal to council in June, as they will be voting on this very important piece of South Norfolk development.
Dancing in the Street
Despite the bitter temperatures, there was dancing in the street on March 14th at the site of the future ForKids National Headquarters as attendees joined a specially directed flash mob dance during the sign-unveiling celebration. Mayor West and several council members attended as well as many board members from ForKids. It was a great day and a great time in South Norfolk history. Construction on the new $11-million headquarters on Poindexter is scheduled to start in the fall.
22nd Street Bridge construction
The 22nd Street bridge is finally out for bid with bid’s closing on May 10, 2018. Construction is set to being in August. There will also be utility work going on around the site and across the bridge. Please be patient as the construction starts and continues for the next 18 months.
Fixing pot holes
In February after our two snow storms, our streets were riddled with pot holes. The South Norfolk Civic League created a “Report it” page for reports of Potholes, and we were able to report and get those repaired quickly.
